Raised in 1915-16 in the Isle of Wight firm fine textured juicy flesh which is quite sweet when ripe with a faint aromatic flavour. Cooks well. Juices well – pick early October

Cox like apple. Dates from 1900 developed in Berkshire parentage Cox's Orange Pippin and Worcester Pearmain firm, fine-textured, juicy flesh with a sweet and good aromatic flavour. Pick mid October.

Raised at Lon Ashton Research Station Bristol in 1924 parentage Worcester Pearmain and Beauty of Bath: early eating apple with firm, crisp juicy flesh with a sweet and refreshing nature - picking time August. Crimson fruit can be stored.

22. Apple Duke of Devonshire
Raised in 1825 at Holker Hall in Lancashire firm fine-textured, rather dry flesh with a rich, nutty flavour. Picking time early October
24. Apple Sops in Wine
Very old English culinary and cider apple . Flesh is red as if soaked in red wine and is sweet, juicy and pleasantly flavoured. Picking time mid October It makes a pleasant aromatic eating apple and a good contribution to a traditional cider blend. It has particularly attractive dark pink blossom and crimson fruits with pink stained flesh, giving it an ornamental quality too; even the wood has a deep pink stain. Trees are vigorous growers with a spreading habit and can give good crops. It is related to Pendragon, a very similar apple from Cornwall.

Raised in 1924 at Dovecourt in Essex : fruits have a little soft, fine textured, juicy flesh with a little acid, slightly aromatic and pleasant flavour. Picking time early august

Found in a garden in Lakenham, Norwich in 1794 firm, coarse-textured, moderately juicy flesh with a fairly acidic flavour. Picking time early October

One of the best of the white flowered Crab Apples. The buds start pink in late April, but soon open to brilliant white flowers which cover the tree, The fruits are abundant with orange, yellow and red markings about an inch in diameter and persist on the tree following leaf fall.

Pears
27. Clapps Favourite Pear
Raised by Thaddeus Clapp of Massachussets USA e: ating/cooking pear. Yellow green skin, white, juicy flesh with a sweet flavour. Picking time early in season….. August-September good nectar for bees etc
30. Williams Pear
Good for cooking and eating. The taste of Williams Bon Chretien pears is, overall, sweet but there is a background hint of acidity. There is a slight musk element in the aroma. The flesh is juicy and soft when ripe. One benefit of Williams pears is that they cook very well. The majority of the world production of tinned pears are of the Williams variety. Fruit is produced mid season and Williams Bon Chretien should be harvested when the pears are slightly under-ripe. This variety is no different from others, after harvest it should be stored in cool conditions after harvest and bought inside the house for a couple of days prior to eating.

Dates back to 1884 a variety of Leon Leclerc de Laval (female parent. Named as Conference 1895 at the British Pear Conference: Skin colour green-ligght brown russet. Cream flesh with a slight pink tinge . Fruit has a sweet pleasant flavour. Picking time October

Raised in 1820 in Boulogne, France: white tinged pink, tender juicy flesh with a rose water flavour picking time October
41. Comice Pear
Doyenne du Comice 1840 France, shortly introduced to England: Green –yellow skin , flesh colour white. Sweet deep pear flavour, soft and melting texture. Harvest October
56. Catillac
Pear identified by Brogdale National Fruit Collection as a Catillac. Historic pear. First described in 1665, grown in the gardens of Louis XIV at Versaillles: Culinary pear. White, crisp, gritty, hard flesh with a musky flavour. They remain hard and have no noticeable smell. They are not edible unless cooked – I baked some in the oven in butter, sugar vanilla pod and a little white wine and they were good, held their shape, tasted ok. Simmered in water they did not do so well – if that is any use.
